5 Steps to Getting Your Blog Posts Read and Acted On
There are many solopreneurs out there – coaches, speakers, info-marketers, etc. – who have a blog, post regularly, but it’s almost like a hobby, as almost no one reads their posts OR even if they read a post or two, they don’t return and become a regular reader.
Here are 5 Steps that will ensure that your blog will be attractive to your ideal clients and will transform them into regular readers AND hopefully into regular buyers:
1. Know Your Ideal Client!
While this sounds like a “Duh…!” point, this is the most important, yet often most neglected point: ensure that your blog is attractive to your ideal clients(!) – meaning, Blog on the ONE TOPIC that addresses your ideal clients’ main challenges!
For example, if I’m your blog visitor and my greatest challenge is that I don’t seem to be able to focus on my tasks and I feel unproductive and overwhelmed, but you are blogging on personal-development related topics, such as conflict management, effective communication, goal-setting, law of attraction, etc., then I’ll definitely not stick around.
Understand that very few people are interested in reading a broad array of topics. Most people are looking for solutions to very specific needs. In this case, (sticking with the original example), I’d be looking for anything that could help me eliminate getting overwhelmed and increase my productivity. If I see posts about improving my ability to focus, it’ll be a special bonus and I’ll definitely read older posts and sign up to receive future posts in my email inbox.
Action Step: Create an “avatar” (an image) of your ideal client:
- How old is s/he? What is her main challenge – what keeps her up at night?
- What is his/her financial situation? (Do realize that if your ideal reader/ideal client is broke, they won’t be able to buy anything you sell)
- What is his/her preferred way to consume “solutions” – that is, how does your ideal client prefer to solve her problems: Video Training Course? Live Event? Coaching? Step-by-Step Training Manual?
(a) Create as vivid of a picture of your ideal client as possible
(b) give them great value that’s relevant to them
(c) this way you’ll create a loyal following who’ll gladly start buying from you what you’ll offer them.
2. Blog on a Topic that You Know AND/OR Are Passionate About!
It is always best to blog – and try and make money from – a topic that you know well. It is far easier to write about what you know than to try to write about something that you don’t know anything about, and you might just do it because you know it sells well. Having said that, do realize that you can find free content on almost any subject, so you can pick a subject that you think would be profitable, but you don’t really know anything about.
As long as you are passionate about a topic AND are willing to invest time to learn about it, you can find free content in the form of PLR (Private Label Rights) Articles that you can use as you wish on your blog.
Ideally, of course, you should write about what you know AND are passionate about AND is in line with Point 1 above (addresses a major need/pain of your ideal client).
Action Step: Identify a topic to blog about – a topic that would allow you to blog regularly and it’d help solve your ideal clients’ challenges and/or help them accomplish a strong desire (e.g. live a life of adventure, grow one’s business, etc.).
This topic should ideally be something you know a lot about, OR something that you are passionate about and are willing to invest some time to study it and share your learning with your blog readers.
3. Have a Call to Action!
“Call to Action” does not necessarily mean that you should try to sell in every blog post. In fact, DON’T TRY TO DO THAT! At least 50% of your blog posts should focus on delivering value, building trust, credibility, and loyalty to you. If you keep trying to sell, some of your readers might never come back.
So what are some calls to action that are not self-serving? Simple. Depending on what your post is about, invite your reader to take action. For example,
Action Step: Identify the next 5 blog posts that you’ll write and come up with action steps for each. Make the Calls to Actions of 3 of your blog posts – non-salesy, focusing on inviting your reader to take action and IMPLEMENT what they read about; then have 2 of your blog posts with Calls to Action to buy something you have for sell.
4. Keep Your Blog Posts Short & Easy to Read!
Make sure to keep your blog posts short and focused on one single topic. Use short paragraphs, bullet-points, and headlines & sub-headlines on longer posts. In an age of short attention span, your longer posts might never get read, hence losing your audience’s attention and perhaps losing some potential sales. Instead, stick to the point, give excellent value, and keep your posts short.
5. Invite Your Reader to Interact with You!
The money is in relationships! Yes, we’ve all heard it and it’s true, “The money is on the list!” But it’s in “the list” that you have a relationship with, and blogging can provide you that “list” and the relationship. To achieve that, make sure to invite your reader to comment on your posts.
The calls to action can be as simple as “Got Questions? Post them Below” or “Let Me See You Are Alive – Post Your Questions or Comments Below!”… and variations of this; OR you can have calls to action with images and Order buttons that lead your readers to your service, product, or an affiliate product.
